Remote Learning Notes and Links

Page history last edited by Keith Schoch 4 years ago

Here is where Mr. Schoch will post online learning activities for Remote Instruction days.

If you want some fun online reading practice in the meantime, check out the articles at Wonderopolis! Each article includes a short comprehension quiz as well as a vocabulary check-up.

FYI if you lost the first article of the packet, it is on the NJ testing site (beginning on p. 22).

Day One Notes (3/16):

As promised, here are some ELA Enrichment Sites for those students looking for more to do. You will need to be logged in as a Bedminster School user to access this page. More sites to come!

ALSO, if you ever skipped a GAL Testmoz and have a zero in the gradebook, you can go back and do that NOW.

Email Mr. Schoch if you do an old Testmoz so it can be entered into the gradebook (only look at GAL 16 and beyond).

Day Two Notes (3/17):

Need some help getting the written response for "Bookworm" started?

Ms. McCoy shared this helpful template that uses the RACE strategy (and yes, the RACE strategy should be used when writing your responses).FYI if you lost the first article of the packet, it is on the NJ testing site (beginning on p. 22).

Someone who is on the Mr. Schoch's Class groupchat (#bestteacherever #heneedstogetnewjokes) please let everyone know that I am keeping daily notes here. Thanks.

FYI: If you didn't do it yet, finish reading ALL of Prisoner B-3087, especially the end part! If you don't have your book, then you will need to text a friend and ask how it ends.

Day Three Notes (3/18):

If you need help, this slide show provides a refresher of how Boggle is played.

Have a younger sibling? Let them try this Wednesday Trivia Quiz on children's animated movies.

Do you miss GAL? Here is a free site that allows you to practice your Greek and Latin roots. It includes some we haven't learned (yet) so don't hesitate to open another tab to look up a root if you need to. How far can you get in the levels?

Don't miss GAL quite that much? Then try this shorter, somewhat fun game to review your roots.

Bored? Mr. Schoch posted a new picture on the Bonus Secret Page. Try going to Jigsaw Planet and creating your own puzzle and then sharing it with a friend.

Day Four Notes (3/19):

If you haven't done so yet, check your GMail. You should have an invitation to take a survey.

For today's work, you should be writing at least one paragraph from the Creative Writing Prompts page.

I will also be sending out an email about how to join ReadTheory, where you can read short text passages on your own, at your level, and score Knowledge Points as you progress. More on that tomorrow, but some of you might want to get a head start on that.

Day Five Notes (3/20):

If you haven't done so yet, check your GMail. You will find directions about how to join a site called ReadTheory. Get logged today to make sure it works for you!

For today, Day 5, you need to complete both sides of the Character Motives worksheet (not online) and also do an activity on the Verso website (see below).

For today, you need to log into Verso. A walk-through of how to sign up is on YouTube here; I suggest you watch this first!

Below are the steps shown in the video.

1) Log onto your Google Drive school account.

2) Go to https://v2.versoapp.com/ in another tab. (Right click the link; choose Open Link in New Tab).

3) Click on "Create Student Account."

4) Click on "Sign in with Google."

5) Add REAL first name and last initial (NOT whole last name).

6) Enter class code xshj04.

7) If the picture shown for your account is you, change it to something else that does not identify your identity.

8) Click on "View Classes."

9) Click on "Schoch Grade 6."

10) Click on the Activity.

11) Click on the video (animal picture) to watch the video.

12)  Read the prompts.

13)  Copy and paste the Model Response sentence starters if you want to use them to start your answers.

14) Post your response.

15) Respond to at least two other students.

Finish reading ALL of Prisoner B-3087 if you haven't already.

Have a great weekend!

Day Six Notes (3/23):

CHECK YOUR EMAIL!

I am very impressed with the writing you posted for the first Verso activity! Very thoughtful responses! Just a reminder that you should NOT include your name. We want people responding to what you write, not who you are. You can still go back to Verso to leave comments for classmates, and to upvote those comments you found most helpful or inspirational.

A reminder that you should take advantage of this time you have at home. Play a game with your family! Create something (a Lego brick structure, a dance, a painting, a comedy sketch, a song, an avatar, a story, a cake!) and share it with me (or at least share a picture). Thanks to a very talented student who shared the beautiful drawing to the right. Can you guess the artist?

PLUS, I did post a new survey based upon questions that you guys recommended. I upgraded the account so that EVERYONE can respond, as much as needed.

(If you want to learn more about the whole zoo controversy mentioned in Verso, read the article here that goes into more depth!).

Day Seven Notes (3/24):

Check your GMail!

Today you should be working on the essay prompt for the "Kitten Dreams" article.

You should definitely use the Prisoner B-3087 p. 153 format for help when organizing your response (it's on your Drive). If your response is not an entire paragraph like that (with a hook, thesis, three ideas, three citationselaboration, and a closing sentence), then you haven't written enough. Not sure if you wrote enough? Color code it to find out!

You can also go back to the Trudy Ederle paragraph for help!

See your GMail for other stuff that is going on!

Day Eight Notes (3/25):

Today is a catch-up day.

But in case you're ready to move forward, the new Verso is posted. You should now be able to log on (NOT Sign Up) using your Google account. Go to Verso now.

Also, you should have received an email notifying you of a baby picture challenge and a create-your-own avatar challenge. Go to the Cool Tools page on Schochsite for lots of avatar creators.

Lastly, here is today's Wednesday Trivia for the little kids! You can share it with your little siblings and cousins, or even try it yourself!

Day Nine Notes (3/26):

For today, return to Verso for an activity on the History of Television. You will first be asked to read an article and answer some questions (via Testmoz), and then write a response at Verso. Don't forget to also comment upon and "like" some of your classmates' responses.

The other assignment today is to interview an adult (anyone 18 or over) about cliques (pronounced clicks).According to Google definitions, a clique is a "small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common, who spend time together and do not readily allow others to join them."

In many TV shows and movies about high school, students might sort themselves into cliques such as the jocks (athletes), the nerds (really smart kids), the mean girls (catty popular girls).

Here are the questions to ask:

  • Did your high school have cliques?
  • If so, what were some of the cliques?
  • Were you a part of one?
  • What were the benefits to being in a clique?
  • What problems could be caused by cliques?

You can either write down or type the responses, or even have the adult type the responses if they wish.

Eventually the responses should be typed into this Google doc format and shared to Mr. Schoch.

Please get this done and shared by Monday, March 30.

Day Ten Notes (3/27):

Want to see the results for Survey #2? Check them out here! (It's a video!).

Challenge yourself to identify your classmates from when they were youngsters!

Play Battle of the Babies! It would be cool to call a friend and go through the game together!

(So far, only CC78, WJ56, ER56 and SAJ56 have perfect scores! But only SA78 had it on the first try).

Did you miss sending in an image for the baby photo challenge? You can still create an avatar of yourself for the Avatar Guessing Game! Use one of the avatar creators on this page or find another on the Internet. It should somehow reflect your personality and your interests, even if it doesn't totally look like you. When done, send a copy to Mr. Schoch!

Today's assignment (from the Remote Learning Packet):

Choose a Creative Writing Prompt from #21 ONLY and write at least three paragraphs OR a story (lined paper or Google Doc). "But Mr. Schoch, I have a story idea already that I would like to write about!" Awesome! Email me the idea and I will probably say, "Go for it!"

And YES! by popular demand we will have a second Battle of the Babies for all who did not send in photos the first time. Send in a photo by next Thursday, please! Even if you already sent in a picture, you can send a different picture if you wish.

Day Eleven Notes (3/30):

Monday is a catch up day! Work on anything you might still owe me (or another teacher).

PLEASE NOTE: In response to the extended closure dates, I changed the Remote Learning Packet! See the newly updated packet.

AND CHECK YOUR EMAIL EVERY DAY! Today, for example, I created a Google Classroom and sent an access code to EVERYONE.  But ten more students still need to sign up!

You are welcome to start Tuesday's activities if everything else is done.
