Question:
Why do students need to read at home? Don't you already read in class and assign lots of homework?
Answer:
If you take a look at the research on reading, you'll find overwhelming evidence that independent, sustained reading is the most effective way to improve reading ability. Yes, we do lots of reading in school, but not nearly enough time is available to devote to sustained silent reading. Twenty minutes a night (or more!) will make a significant difference, since it yields over over 100 hours of additional reading time by year's end.
Question:
Why don't you assign homework on weekends?
Answer:
So many reasons! First, I feel that I assign enough work over the course of the week to teach and assess all learning objectives. Second, as a parent I feel that weekends are for family. In my opinion no child should have a cloud hanging over her for two days of what should be a well-deserved break. Third, no one wants to start off the new week with discussions about missing homework, failed responsibilities, etc. And actually, there is weekend homework! Students are still responsible for nightly reading. This, however, should not be seen as a chore, but as a pleasure.
